I have talked to so very respectable people who I love dearly make the claim that There is no differnce between total inability and total unwillingnesss. Something that I simply can not disagree with any more.
I have decide to make an illustration of the difference because I am one to believe a picutre tells a thousand words.
Let first illustrate totaly inability. There is a prisioner in a cage he is in a deep sleep. A officer stands at the door a tells the prisioner if he just get’s down of his knee’s and begged for forgiveness he will let the man out side out of prision and make him a room in his mansion. The officer waits for a response from the prisioner. But the prisioner does not respond because HE IS SLEEPING COMPLETELY UNAWARE OF THE REQUEST THE OFFICER MADE. The officor walks away and weeps bitterly about the man rejection to his offer. He then comes back full of wrath and has the prisioner tormented for the rest of his life.
Now what are some facts we can gather from this illustration. We can first say that the prisioner is completely inoccent for not excepting the offer, And he is a victim of a completely unjust punishment. WE can also gather that that officor was not mocking the prisioner and the request was valid. Otherwise why in the word would he have went away weeping bitterly. So we must say that either the officor was ignorant of the fact that the prisioner was sleeping or that he had no valid reasoning to weep in the first place. We can also say that there is also no valid reasoning for the man judgment and it was actually a cruel act. Well as you can proberly guess the officor is God and the prsioner is fallen man in this insane illustrartion. This is what the view of total inability states.
Now lets look at the same illustration but this time instead of the man being totally unable the man being totally unwilling. There is a man in a cage who is awake in his bed with his fellow cell mate. They are commiting a disgusting sin of homosexuality. The officor walks into the cage and tells the man if he will just repent(turn away and totaly forsake) of all his sins and get on his knee’s and begs for forgiveness he will let him out of this prisioner and give him a room in his mansion. The prisioners spits in the officors face and screams and yells at the officor to get out of his cage and never come back. The officor leaves the cage and weeps bitterly at the prisioners rejection. The officor then full of indignation orders that the prisioner be tormented all the days of his life.
Now lets gather a couple of facts from this illustration. WE can first see that the prisoner is completely wicked and vile man. He understood and precieved the offer that was being made but out right rejected it. Nothing made that man reject the offer but his own will. We can also see that the officor was a loving forgiving man who honestly made the offer to the prisoner . We can understand completely why the officer weeped and his judgement was a completely rigthouess one.
Now if you honestly can say that these two pictures don’t paint a completely different picture but are the same for the fact that both men where unable if you really think about it. For the first illustration the man was unable because he physically couldn’t respond and in the second ilustration the man was completely unable because he decide to reject the offer by his OWN DISCISSION. With this kind of thinking we can say that man is unable to do everything he doesn’t do because he choose not to do it. With is a really silly statement. If that where the case I could say I was unable to not type this paper because I choose to type this paper. Or I could say since I have to go to the bathroom but I want to finish the point I have made in this paper and choose to finish this paper that I am so how unable to go to the bathroom. That is a really silly statement to make. That is not profound that just really silly and ridiculous statement.
Think about a dog. He may well have free choice between a bowl of leafy spinach and a sirloin steak. He will go after the steak EVERY time – since it is in his nature. Same with man – man’s nature is to gravitate towards sin continually – Genesis 6:5; 1 Cor 2:10-17 just to name a few passages
